ELTHAM NORTH 2009 SOLAR ENERGY PROJECT
Submitted by David F on Thu, 15/10/2009 - 14:22.
Eltham North Primary School has received $50 000 from the Federal Gov't Solar in Schools program and $15, 000 from the Victorian Solar in Schools Initiative (Sustainability Victoria). This has enabled the installation of a 5.2 kw Grid Connect Solar System complete with automatic monitoring system, and additional energy saving measures, including: installation of ceiling fans (in portables) and lighting upgrades - de-lamping, timers and efficient globes. Educational opportunities in the ENPS community about the technology and benefits of generating renewable solar energy will be provided with parent, student and teacher information sessions. Placement and monitoring of this system will further expand opportunities for promotion of sustainable practices and enhance energy reduction practices. The process will be documented on our school website – which is already a successful resource. When installation is complete (Term 4 2009) the energy generation will be monitored, by staff and environmental leaders, in conjunction with other energy saving procedures and devices - as a part of our ongoing data collection and curriculum.
This information will then be reported to the school community. All data collected, on how the additional incentives - involving modification of lighting and timers, will highlight further energy reductions, in our Energy procedures. Curriculum activities will include investigations and explorations of renewable energy topics. Technical support will be provided by the supplier (Solar Sunwerx P/L) and other areas identified for potential and long-term energy savings will be incorporated in our school plan. Education and communication will be co-ordinated by the Sustainable Schools co-ordinator and School Improvement team as a part of the School Annual Implementation Plan
