Term 4 Week 2

A message from the Art Room

This week, the Year 3 students were very lucky to have a special visitor during their Visual Art session. Marc McBride generously offered his time to demonstrate some cool drawing techniques. The students were very excited.

Marc has illustrated over 200 book covers and 10 picture books, along with many magazines. For those who may not know, Marc is the illustrator of Emily Rodda’s best-selling Deltora Questseries. Many of the students recognised his work and were very pleased to have him in the Art room.

We watched Marc illustrate two dragons using coloured food dyes and an air brush. The students were captivated with the use of colour and how easy Marc made it look! Some things we learnt from Marc whilst watching him were:

~ Shadows make things look 3D

~ Colour pops when complemented with their opposite colour

~ Always start with light colour, and then add dark

~ Colour always changes as you look further away. The further away you look, the lighter it will look

~ If we want creatures to look real and believable always add patterns. Patterns in nature are everywhere. Every animal has patterns

~ Light changes feelings of the illustration. It helps sets the mood and creates different atmosphere

Marc reminded us that when we draw, we are in charge of our drawing and we can create whatever we want. We can use drawing to help express ourselves. He reassured us that making mistakes can sometimes help improve our overall drawing as mistakes can add texture.

At the end of the lesson Marc gave us two new picture books written by Sophie Laguna and illustrated by Marc himself. The books are: “The House on Pleasant Street” and“A Friend for Ruby.” Both books will find their new home in our school library and be shared with the rest of the school community.

It was an absolute pleasure having Marc visit us in the art room. Next week we will continue on with drawing dragons and following Marc’s wonderful drawing tips!
