Our Literacy program at ENPS, develops strong reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills - the foundation for all learning. From Foundation to Year 6, students gain the confidence and capability to communicate effectively and think critically. We follow a structured, evidence-based approach aligned with the Science of Learning. Drawing on best practice from Victoria, Australia, and internationally, and guided by literacy experts and research, we ensure every child receives high-quality English instruction. Our program supports students at every stage of their learning - from early decoding to advanced comprehension and writing.

A Literacy Lesson at ENPS

Daily Review: Retrieval Practice
Lessons begin with activities that revisit previously learned reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. These tasks help students strengthen memory and retain important literacy concepts over the long term.

Explicit Instruction: Skill Development
New concepts are introduced step by step, with teachers highlighting key vocabulary, main ideas, and clear definitions. Lessons follow a gradual release model:

“I do” – Teachers model reading strategies, writing techniques, and language skills using examples and think-aloud demonstrations.
“We do” – Guided practice allows students to apply new skills with teacher support, receiving feedback, prompts, and corrections to build accuracy and confidence.
“You do” – Independent practice gives students the chance to apply skills on their own, solidifying understanding and developing fluency. Tasks are differentiated to challenge all learners, from those just starting out to advanced students.

This structured, evidence-based approach ensures students develop mastery in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while building confidence as capable, independent communicators

Junior School - Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL)

In the Junior School, we use Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) to build strong foundations in reading, spelling and writing.

LLLL is a structured, evidence-based program that teaches children how sounds connect to letters using a multi-sensory approach. Through explicit, step-by-step lessons, students learn phonics skills, practise blending sounds to read words, and segment words to spell them. They also learn about concepts of print including sentence structure, grammar and punctuation, as well as vocabulary and comprehension.

Lessons are interactive and engaging, with hands-on activities, decodable texts, and early writing tasks. By building strong decoding and spelling skills from the beginning, LLLL sets students up for long-term success in reading, writing, and learning across all subjects.

Senior School - Structured Literacy

In the Senior School, our Structured Literacy approach continues to strengthen reading, spelling, and writing through explicit, systematic teaching. Students build fluency, expand vocabulary, and deepen comprehension as they move from learning to read to reading to learn.

Text-Based Units & Word Study
Our Literacy program uses high-quality, carefully selected texts to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students explore vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and writing craft through shared texts, then apply what they learn in their own writing. Hands-on activities, discussions, presentations, and collaborative tasks further strengthen speaking and listening.

Explicit word study teaches spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and word origins, supporting vocabulary growth and reading comprehension. This integrated approach helps every student become a confident, capable communicator and lifelong learner.
