How We Teach

At Eltham North Primary School, we are proud of our comprehensive and engaging curriculum. Our programs are designed to foster curiosity, build strong foundations and inspire a love of lifelong learning. Our curriculum is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). This framework guides what we teach and how we assess student learning from Foundation to Year 6.

Victorian Curriculum 2.0

Victorian Curriculum 2.0 provides clear and consistent expectations for student learning across all Victorian schools. It strengthens the focus on essential knowledge and skills, particularly in literacy and numeracy. The curriculum:Sets clear learning expectations at each levelStrengthens literacy and numeracy across all subjectsProvides structured, sequenced learningSupports consistent assessment and reportingIncorporates the Australian Curriculum while reflecting Victorian prioritiesStudents develop strong foundations in English and Mathematics, along with knowledge and skills in:ScienceHumanitiesThe ArtsHealth and Physical EducationTechnologiesLanguagesImportant priorities such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, sustainability, and Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia are embedded throughout learning areas.

Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0

Our teaching approach is guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0), developed by the Victorian Department of Education.

The Victorian Teaching and Learning Model  2.0 includes 2 components:

. Elements of learning – the process of human learning, based on cognitive science, neuroscience and education psychology.

. Elements of teaching – representing the evidence-based teaching practices that most effectively support learning: planning, enabling learning, explicit teaching and supported application.

This evidence-based model supports high-quality teaching in every classroom.

At Eltham North Primary School, this means:
. Clear learning intentions and success criteria
. Explicit teaching and modelling
. Guided practice and independent learning
. Ongoing feedback to improve learning
. Regular assessment to track progress

We use student data to inform our teaching and ensure every child is supported, challenged and progressing.

Strong Foundations for Every Child

We are committed to:
. High expectations for all students
. Inclusive and supportive classrooms
. Structured literacy and numeracy programs
. Differentiated teaching to meet individual needs

Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive at school and beyond.
